Penn Corridor and RiverPlace Merge
Tuesday, February 02, 2010
In November 2009, Penn Corridor and RiverPlace officially merged with the selection of a new board and approval of new bylaws. As of January 2010, the organization will be known as the Penn Corridor Initiative.
Board chair, John Weidenhammer, said, “The interwoven interests of the two groups in advocacy for Penn Avenue, Penn Street and the area along the Schuylkill River provided an opportunity for business and community leaders to create a more efficient and fluent organization. This group of all volunteers has a continued interest in continuing the vision for a vibrant urban core.”
The organization will continue to brand the area as “Penn Corridor” through marketing and the promotion of the arts and special events along the two-mile stretch. Its focus will be clean and safe, hospitality and events, and fine arts.

The Penn Corridor is Greater Reading’s hub for arts, culture, shopping, dining, and entertainment. It is a two-mile long district that includes Penn Street from City Park in Reading through the downtown area and across the Penn Street Bridge to Penn Avenue, extending through West Reading and Wyomissing. The Penn Corridor Initiative is made up of members from RiverPlace Development and the Penn Corridor Steering Committee who are dedicated to providing a clean and safe environment, marketing, and promoting special events along the Corridor.
