Colleges & Universities

Greater Reading is home to five institutions of higher education:  Albright College, Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Penn State University (Berks Campus), and Reading Area Community College.  The colleges are actively involved in community engagement and provide training and technical assistance to businesses in the region. 

In addition, nearly 100 colleges and universities lie within a 50-mile radius of Greater Reading including internationally renowned institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Lehigh University, and Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges.

Greater Reading also has two technical schools, the Berks Technical Institute and Pace Institute.  The Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center and Berks Career and Technology Center provide an innovative curriculum that prepares students for jobs in the local workforce. And in the healthcare field, the Reading Hospital & Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center offer specialized training in a variety of programs.

Langan Allied Health Academy
The Langan Allied Health Academy is an education/training facility created by Reading Area Community College, Centro Hispano Daniel Torres, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and St. Joseph Medical Center. Launched in May 2005, it is located at St. Joseph's 6th and Walnut campus in center city Reading. This (academy) partnership trains medical professionals for careers in healthcare including Certified Nurse Asst./Vocational CAN Training, Dental Assistant, Radiologist Technology, Computer Training, and Adult Literacy/ESL. Many of students are bilingual and are from the city’s growing Latino population.
